What is a Mommy Makeover?
A Mommy Makeover can entail many different procedures. There are many different changes that occur to a woman’s body following pregnancy and nursing. Some of these changes include changes to the facial skin and appearance, as well as changes to the breasts, tummy, and even the vaginal area. Stereotypically, a mommy makeover entails breast enlargement, as well as abdominal contouring which may include a tummy tuck, liposuction, or both.
A woman’s breasts are affected with pregnancy and nursing. Many women following pregnancy and child rearing prefer to have a breast augmentation with breast implants, a breast lift or both. There are also some patients that require and prefer having a breast reduction along with a breast lift. Breast augmentations are frequently performed with silicone gel implants. Silicone implants are much more natural in appearance and feel compared with saline implants. There are now multiple options available for silicone implants, including the round gel with different profiles, as well as the shaped cohesive gel ‘Gummy Bear’ implants. Dr. Grover will help you determine which implant choice is best for your needs and your body type.
There are different options with a breast lift or mastopexy. Some mastopexies, or breast lifts, are performed with a doughnut or circumaerieolar technique while others require a circumvertical or lollipop technique, and some will require a wise-pattern or anchor scar incision. This is dependent on how much skin needs to be tailored and how much the nipple areolar complex should be raised. Dr. Grover will help you determine which technique is the best for your body type.
Abdominal contouring may involve liposuction alone, a tummy tuck (or abdominoplasty), or a combination of abdominoplasty and liposuction of the waist, love handles, or flanks. If one maintains excellent elasticity and has good abdominal tone without stretch marks, liposuction is a wonderful alternative; however, if one has loose skin and stretch marks, as well as a loose abdominal wall with what is called “diastasis recti” or separation of the abdominal muscles, then, abdominoplasty is the preferred technique to obtain a flat tummy. This does require a longer incision in the bikini area; however, this incision can frequently be covered by most bikinis or panties. Liposuction is frequently performed in conjunction with an abdominoplasty around the love handles or flanks. Many times, patients also request further contouring of the thighs with liposuction, along with their abdominoplasty. Dr. Grover utilizes a “no-drain” technique for his abdominoplasties over the past several years. He places what are called progressive tension sutures or “quilting sutures” which help re-approximate the fatty tissue layer back down to the abdominal muscle area which avoids any space between these areas, and minimizes any fluid buildup, thus eliminating the need for any drains. Dr. Grover also focuses much time and attention to obtaining a very natural and sexy appearing bellybutton or umbilicus and avoiding the unsightly dog-ear.
In addition to breast surgery and abdominal surgery, there are times when patients request vaginal rejuvenation or labiaplasty as part of their mommy makeover. It is not infrequent to see elongation or excessive redundancy of the labia minora, or inner lips, of the labia which will require refinements to give a much more youthful appearance. Dr. Grover utilizes the wedge technique in performing his labiaplasties. Please see the labiaplasty section for further information.
Where is the Procedure Performed?
The mommy makeover is performed at Dr. Grover’s outpatient surgery center. Dr. Grover utilizes excellent board-certified anesthesiologists to deliver the best in care and the safest methods for anesthesia. Dr. Grover’s abdominoplasty patients or Mommy Makeover patients will stay with an aftercare nurse for one or several nights following the surgery. Patients will be up walking around the next day; however, they will need to be in a somewhat flexed position for the first five to seven days. Patients may stand up straight by seven days, and may usually start to drive by ten to fourteen days. The sutures are dissolvable and a patient will be wearing an abdominal binder the first week, followed by an abdominal girdle or corset for the next four to six weeks.
Patients will see a dramatic change in the appearance of their breasts and abdomen the day after surgery. There is usually minimal swelling and most of the swelling will resolve in the first three to four months. Scars will take one whole year to fully mature; however, they are very nice in appearance after the first several months. Silicone scar gel is utilized on top of the scars to help achieve the finest and flattest scars. Patients should limit their activity to walking during the first month following an abdominoplasty or mommy makeover, and usually may return to most exercises by two to three months following their procedure. Most patients will describe the discomfort of a mommy makeover or an abdominoplasty as less than what they experienced with a cesarean section.
The mommy makeover procedure has helped so many women achieve a heightened sense of self-confidence, both physically and emotionally.
