Considered by many authorities in the cosmetics industry to be among the most effective strategies for facial rejuvenation, the deep plane facelift is a state-of-the-art technique that smooths surface wrinkles, tightens the underlying musculature, and excises loose sagging skin. Results appear elegant and natural.

Because the deep plane facelift calls for superior skill, it’s important to choose a board-certified plastic surgeon with an eye for detail. Dr. Grover has extensive expertise in facial rejuvenation and can deliver a result that is carefully tailored to your individual wishes.

What is a deep plane facelift?

A deep plane facelift elevates facial contours while repositioning the underlying SMAS muscles (superficial muscular aponeurotic system.) In a conventional facelift, this underlying muscle layer is merely tightened in place. The deep plane approach goes a step further, delving deeper into the muscles and adjusting the entire facial structure in one fluid maneuver, thus producing more significant changes.

What are the advantages of a deep plane facelift?

  • Addresses the face as a whole rather than as individual parts
  • Firms the muscles rather than just tightening the skin
  • Natural, personalized outcome
  • Appropriate for patients of all ages
  • Enhances self-confidence and self-image

Who is a good candidate for a deep plane facelift?

Almost anyone who qualifies for a traditional facelift can benefit from a deep plane lift. Even younger patients can enjoy a deep plane facelift as a preventative measure against the encroaching signs of aging.

As with any surgical procedure, clients should be non-smokers in good mental and physical health. They should be free from any uncontrolled medical concerns such as hypertension or bleeding disorders. Lastly, they should have realistic expectations that are aligned with their treatment plan, as discussed during their private consultation with Dr. Grover.

A deep plane facelift can address:

  • Loss of definition in the jawline
  • Jowls
  • Loss of volume in the midface
  • Sagging cheeks
  • Loose, drooping skin

How is a deep plane facelift performed?

A deep plane facelift is performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis. Local anesthesia with sedation may also be an option for certain patients.

As with a conventional SMAS facelift, Dr. Grover will make small incisions within the folds of the ears and the hairline. He will then access the deeper facial tissue layers and release the ligaments, allowing him to reposition and tighten the facial structure as a single unit. Any excess superficial skin is removed, and the sutures are then closed. The patient is placed in the recovery suite and carefully monitored.

What is recovery like?

After surgery, patients need a friend or loved one to escort them home and stay with them for the first 24 hours to assist with basic chores. Dr. Grover will make sure that patients go home with a detailed aftercare plan as well as pain medications, antibiotics, anti-nausea pills, and the proper bandages.

Patients will experience swelling, bruising, and tenderness after their deep plane facelift, but because the surgical approach is less superficial than with a conventional lift, side effects may be more manageable.

Patients can usually expect to resume work within 7-10 days using makeup to conceal any lingering discoloration. Strenuous exercise should be avoided for 4-6 weeks, or as directed by Dr. Grover.
